A brand-new ECOSIBERIA website on ecotourism in Central Siberia has been launched (03.09.2008)
A brand-new ECOSIBERIA website on ecotourism in Central Siberia has been launched, see at http://www.ecosiberia.org
Central Siberia is a great place for ecotourism. Thanks to a new unique website offering well-structured ecotourist information in English, German and Russian, the public anywhere in the world can now learn about the beauty of the region, its protected areas and cultural monuments. The website, replete with excellent photos, has been developed within a broader project: Enhancing biodiversity conservation and ecotourism in Russia', which supports sustainable ecotourism initiatives and assists Russian protected areas in developing best practice in conservation and ecotourism. The project, implemented in Central Siberia as its pilot region, was developed within the PECE (Partners for Environmental Co-operation in Europe) Initiative financed by Defra (UK). It is carried out by Fieldfare International Ecological Development Plc from the UK and its Russian partners Environmental Education Centre Zapovedniks and Association of Ecotourism.
The ECOSIBERIA website has been envisioned as a key marketing instrument to promote genuine ecotourism development and lure tourists and investors alike to this largely unspoilt part of our planet that offers much more than the notorious Siberian cold. Two UNESCO World Natural Heritage sites, ancient monuments as old as the Egyptian pyramids, pristine nature with fascinating wildlife and exquisite local cuisine are just a few of many attractions on offer in the region. The launch of the website is only the first step. There are further plans to gradually expand the contents of the website, especially to feature more locally provided ecotourism services and products (e.g. guided tours, accommodation, transport, entertainment, souvenirs, etc.).
For more detailed information, please contact the project manager Svetlana Belova at zapovedniks@gmail.com or by phone +421 902 803362.

Short description of evaluation of EMAS, Eco-Schools and Learning by Physical Activity (18.03.2008)
EMAS and Eco-Schools
In 2004 Uddevalla municipality became Sweden’s first EMAS registered municipality. The most crucial issue for the Education department to work with was supporting learning for sustainable development and nature interpretation. To support this process we have arranged meetings, seminars and conferences for school staff. Since the start we have arranged 192 meetings, seminars and conferences for 3179 persons about our environmental management system (EMAS) and learning for sustainable development. At the start of the BSR Eagle project Uddevalla didn’t have any schools and pre-schools working with the Eco-School concept but the amount grew continuously during the project. At the end of the project we had 21 Eco-schools and pre-schools. (Now we have 23, so it is still increasing). To inspire the schools’ and preschools’ work with Eco-Schools we have started a network for this. We have also developed our home page where we publish the schools’ and pre-schools descriptions of their work. This is a good inspiration for others to see how one can work with the Eco-school concept.
Learning by Physical Activity
The aim with this project was to inspire teachers to use physical activity as a learning method and also to improve health among the youth by being more outdoors and to be more physically active.
In our programme “Learning by Physical Activities” we have arranged 14 seminars for about 280 teachers and we have arranged one 2-days conference with 50 participants. In the project we have built a database with lessons in different topics and for different ages, but with one character in common: to use physical activity as a learning method. Now we have about 100 lessons in the database, but it is continuously growing. We have not been able to measure how much these ideas have been used in the ordinary school work, but the evaluations we have done of the seminars have been very positive. Some of the ideas from this network will be used in a book about “Learning Swedish outdoors” that will be published by the Swedish Nature School Association.
