A brand-new ECOSIBERIA website on ecotourism in Central Siberia has been launched
(03.09.2008)

A brand-new ECOSIBERIA website on ecotourism in Central Siberia has been launched, see at http://www.ecosiberia.org

Central Siberia is a great place for ecotourism. Thanks to a new unique website offering well-structured ecotourist information in English, German and Russian, the public anywhere in the world can now learn about the beauty of the region, its protected areas and cultural monuments. The website, replete with excellent photos, has been developed within a broader project: Enhancing biodiversity conservation and ecotourism in Russia', which supports sustainable ecotourism initiatives and assists Russian protected areas in developing best practice in conservation and ecotourism. The project, implemented in Central Siberia as its pilot region, was developed within the PECE (Partners for Environmental Co-operation in Europe) Initiative financed by Defra (UK). It is carried out by Fieldfare International Ecological Development Plc from the UK and its Russian partners Environmental Education Centre Zapovedniks and Association of Ecotourism.
The ECOSIBERIA website has been envisioned as a key marketing instrument to promote genuine ecotourism development and lure tourists and investors alike to this largely unspoilt part of our planet that offers much more than the notorious Siberian cold. Two UNESCO World Natural Heritage sites, ancient monuments as old as the Egyptian pyramids, pristine nature with fascinating wildlife and exquisite local cuisine are just a few of many attractions on offer in the region. The launch of the website is only the first step. There are further plans to gradually expand the contents of the website, especially to feature more locally provided ecotourism services and products (e.g. guided tours, accommodation, transport, entertainment, souvenirs, etc.).

For more detailed information, please contact the project manager Svetlana Belova at zapovedniks@gmail.com or by phone +421 902 803362.

Short description of evaluation of EMAS, Eco-Schools and Learning by Physical Activity
(18.03.2008)

EMAS and Eco-Schools
In 2004 Uddevalla municipality became Sweden’s first EMAS registered municipality. The most crucial issue for the Education department to work with was supporting learning for sustainable development and nature interpretation. To support this process we have arranged meetings, seminars and conferences for school staff. Since the start we have arranged 192 meetings, seminars and conferences for 3179 persons about our environmental management system (EMAS) and learning for sustainable development. At the start of the BSR Eagle project Uddevalla didn’t have any schools and pre-schools working with the Eco-School concept but the amount grew continuously during the project. At the end of the project we had 21 Eco-schools and pre-schools. (Now we have 23, so it is still increasing). To inspire the schools’ and preschools’ work with Eco-Schools we have started a network for this. We have also developed our home page where we publish the schools’ and pre-schools descriptions of their work. This is a good inspiration for others to see how one can work with the Eco-school concept.

Learning by Physical Activity
The aim with this project was to inspire teachers to use physical activity as a learning method and also to improve health among the youth by being more outdoors and to be more physically active.
In our programme “Learning by Physical Activities” we have arranged 14 seminars for about 280 teachers and we have arranged one 2-days conference with 50 participants. In the project we have built a database with lessons in different topics and for different ages, but with one character in common: to use physical activity as a learning method. Now we have about 100 lessons in the database, but it is continuously growing. We have not been able to measure how much these ideas have been used in the ordinary school work, but the evaluations we have done of the seminars have been very positive. Some of the ideas from this network will be used in a book about “Learning Swedish outdoors” that will be published by the Swedish Nature School Association.

Final publications of BSR EALGE project is published
(04.02.2008)

"Nature schools? They expose you to the nature. In BSR Eagle project you are also exposed to other cultures and languages, and discover their similarities and differences. To do this with your neigbours is peace and conflict education at its best.

I write about “exposing” as if it was something necessary evil and not a true pleasure. My first long-term boyfriend was an ornithologist and we shared only partially the same interests. We listened to rhythm & blues and rock. But while I would have rather read books all evening long, we took my father’s car to the dumping place, opened the car window and listened to the eagle-owl, among the stink and the rats. Later in life I have realised that most things don’t need to exclude each other. You can combine opera and symphonies with rock, and I have nowadays the privilege to be able to enjoy the rich bird life in Maatsalu, West Estonia. The profit of cross-border regional cooperation is that you expose yourself to something you thought was different – just to notice the similarities."

These are addressing words from the Director of the Tallinn Office of Nordic Council of Ministers, Ms. Carita Pettersson.

Director Carita Pettersson

The final publication of the Interreg IIIB project BSR EAGLE is published and printed in 10 languages of Baltic Sea countries.
The broshure is published by BSR Eagle project. Texts and editing: Anna Hirsikoski, Reet Kokovkin, Riina Plosila, Mats Wejdmark, Timo Vuorisalo.

BarnBra method in planning of nature areas in municipality of Habo (Sweden)
(23.10.2007)

Don’t ask children what they think a good school yard should be like, instead, ask them what activities they would like to do – or you might get answers like fair grounds, etc. Adults can of course, easily describe how they prefer an area to be.
This is the crucial point of difference in how to catch up wishes and requirements from children versus adults. In this report we will show some ways how to achieve this.
Store Mosse NP presents the method of BarnBra (Good for Children method) in planning of 5 different nature areas for schools in the municipality of Habo.

Thematic program from Nynäshamn NS on Fire
(12.10.2007)

Fire has always scared people and at the same time they depend on it. Fire is man’s friend as long as he is in control over it, but when he loses control it can be dangerous. Today, fire is not part of our daily lives anymore, but we are still fascinated and curious about it. Many fires today are caused by children and youngsters who play with fire and that comes from curiosity about fire as a phenomena.
The purpose of this fire theme is to ease off the curiosity (without destroying it) about fire, spread information about the risks but also to spread knowledge about how to (in a controlled way) be happy about the heat and the light that fire spreads. Fire is an educational asset to which we can gather and focus on a common exercise. At the camp fire, fairy tales and poems may revive, discussions may refuel and the ascending warm air may arouse afterthought and give new perspectives.

Thematic program from Nynäshamn NS on winter ecology
(11.10.2007)

Thematic program on Winter Ecology is elaborated by the Nynäshamn Nature School for learning about winter ecology using outdoor learning and interdisciplinary teaching methods.
This program is to let the pupils experience and learn about some of the difficulties plants and animals face during the winter, we have chosen coldness as the theme for this field trip and related exercises. Lack of food, light, and water are also important factors but somewhat too complicated for the audience we are targeting. The cold affects all plant and animal life, and the pupils will surely feel it after a day outside.

The Finnish Association of Nature and Environmental Education Schools was established
(01.10.2007)

On Friday, the 28th of September 2007, the kick off meeting of the Association of Finnish Nature and Environmental Education Schools was held in Villa Elfvik, Espoo. In the meeting, 16 Nature and environmental education schools were present.
The aim of the Association is to promote activities of member schools in Finland. “The Association is representing the sustainable way of living, environmental responsibility and accrual of knowledge of nature. Also it promotes the outdoor education and new methods in learning environment” recognises the new chairperson of the Association, Olli Viding from Vantaa Nature School.
"There are altogether 20 Nature and Environmental schools in our country. Most of them belong to regional governments. Therefore, services of nature and environmental schools were available for schools and preschools mostly situated in big cities. It is not so in Sweden and Denmark. It is difficult to plan the long scale development of schools without the support form the National Government”, says Viding.
The Association will mediate contacts between nature schools and authorities and decision makers to foster the environmental education. New Association will come out with new initiatives to enlarge and stabilise the activities in the above-mentioned field.
As members of the Association, nature and environmental schools in Finland, other relevant associations and private persons are welcome. It is also possible to become a supporting member of the Association.

New thematic program Mosses and Lichens from Nynäshamn NS
(20.09.2007)

Mats Wejdmark from Nynäshamn Nature school reports: "The aim of this chapter is to introduce the many different species of mosses and lichens, and the biological diversity of these organisms. Many people think that a moss is just a moss and a lichen is just a lichen. Without further examination and discovery of the differences between species, it is difficult to understand that in fact there are many types of mosses and lichens.
When arguing for the preservation of species, it is vital to stress the importance of biological diversity. Someone who cannot tell one moss from another might not grasp how a specific moss species can be endangered when moss can be found almost everywhere in the forest.
With insight into how mosses and lichens live, how they contribute to ecosystems, and the great diversity, the importance of preservation is more easily understood. In contrast to vascular plants, mosses and lichen can be studied all year round. Viewed through a loupe, the miniature world of mosses and lichens will impress with its colours, shapes, and tiny inhabitants."
The full text of the thematic program is available at our page Thematic Programs (on the left banner).

Protected areas and benefits: Russian experience by Svetlana Belova
(27.08.2007)

BSR EAGLE partner in TACIS project Svetlana Belova has published an article Protected areas and benefits: Russian experience. In the Conclusions of the article Ms Belova indicates:
Thanks to this project, Ecocentre “Zapovedniks” has established and tested a new form of regional development uniting various stakeholders in solving problems near protected areas. The success of the implementation of sustainable livelihoods and tourism development programmes depends only partly on the level of investments (e.g. project grants). It is also important to create efficient co-operation networks of the relevant stakeholders and achieving their active support and involvement in those programmes. Only if there is a positive attitude and feeling of ownership among local communities, long-term results can be attained.
The project has developed methods for training protected area staff, as well as regional administrators and tourism managers. Coordination committees comprising of relevant stakeholders were created, so that sustainable livelihoods and tourism development programmes could have been jointly implemented. We tried to provide favorable conditions (e.g. micro-credits and consulting support) for community involvement in visitor accommodation and related services in order to provide local communities with revenue opportunities.
Article is published in the "Nature and Tourism" conference book (Finland, May, 2007)

Dramatic life of House Martins in Matsalu
(19.06.2007)

Marju Pajumets from Matsalu Nature Centre reports:
At the end of May the webcam was installed under the eave of Matsalu Nature Centre (Estonia) to follow the nesting of House Martins. The couple used the last year’s nest and started to hatch. In the morning of the 10th of June, the nest disappeared from the screen of the webcam. We found the nest under the balcony of the NC. The video recording revealed that on previous night some Strigiformes attacked the nest, probably it was tawny owl.
By the morning of 11th of June it was clear that both House Martin parents were alive and ready to start new nest. It is possible to monitor how they succeed with it.

19th of June. Our House Martins decided to built up a new nest in another corner of the balcony. The new nest seems to be ready quite soon.
There are other nests under the eave of the old manor house. It seems, somehow, that weatherboards of walls are too smooth and nests fall down before they are ready, often. Successful are birds that have chosen the slot between gutter and end of the roof for the nest. This place seems to be much safer when owl attach is in question.

Webcam image is in our home page

The whole system of webcam (camera, computer and WiFi ruter) is installed by the BSR EAGLE project

BSR EAGLE partner Uddevalla Municipality achievements on EMAS program are prized by EU
(31.05.2007)

In 2004 Uddevalla municipality became Sweden’s, and Europe’s, first EMAS registered municipality. The EU’s decision to make EMAS registration possible for municipalities was a first milestone. A second milestone occurred in 2004 when the council obtained the certificate of registration. A third milestone was the EU’s nomination of Uddevalla for a prize as “a big EMAS registered organization”, in 2005.
According to Helene Grantz, the environmental coordinator for the administration of childcare and education, the central EMAS group has been very valuable for communication between the local EMAS groups and the central administration.
The municipality has completed an environmental survey based on the commitment and priorities of each department—without top down regulation but with central support. The administrations were asked: What are we doing today? What do we think is important? What can we improve? The result of this survey was developed into fifteen areas of interest which are also used in the annual environmental presentation (see illustration on the next page).
Based on the environmental survey and the list of fifteen areas of interest, each administration has created their own environmental goals, and decided how to follow up on some other environmental aspects which have been deemed important. The municipal board has also decided upon general goals for the entire municipality.
The entire municipality, and also each department, has to make a presentation of both environmental goals as well as environmental aspects concerning the 15 areas of interest, and the same structure is used for all presentations.

”After EAGLE”
(24.04.2007)

Within the Annual conference of Danish Ranger Association (DRA), a special workshop was dedicated to elaborate the recommendations for the BSR Nature Interpreters and Nature Schools network further cooperation.

Background
Interreg III project BSR Eagle Nature Centres and Environmental Interpretation in the Baltic See Region runs out in 2007. The Board for the Danish Rangers Association had on this background invited to a meting at Bornholm, Denmark, the 11Tht April 2007 to discuss future Nordic Baltic co-operation in the field of Nature Interpretation and Nature Schools “After EAGLE”

Discussion
The vision of the EAGLE project is to improve the role and contribution of nature centres and environmental interpretation as part of the society’s strengthening of sustainable development through education and public participation in relation to protection of environment, natural, cultural and social values and health of the public.

All participants of the meeting agreed on, that the work of the EGALE project has been very valuable and it is very important to find ways to continue Nordic Baltic co-operation in the field of Nature Interpretation, Nature Schools and Nature Centres.

The participant recognized, that many different institutions and organisations with many different names carry out this work in the Nordic Baltic countries. The participants found it important that the future Nordic Baltic work involves all relevant persons and institutions whether we speak about rangers, nature interpreters, teachers etc.

Conclusions
The participants of the meeting recommend, that we try to follow two ways in future Nordic Baltic co-operation in the field of Nature Interpretation, Nature Schools and Nature Centres:

1. We will try to organise a new Interreg project to follow up on the project “Eagle Nature Centres and Environmental Interpretation in the Baltic See Region”. We recognise, that if we wish to continue Nordic Baltic co-operation with “high speed”, it is necessary to find some funding. One of the visions for a new Interreg project could be to organise a common Nordic Baltic training of nature interpreters a la the Nordic Course “Nordplan” for town- and landscape planners.

2. As part of the work in IRF, we will set up a “Nordic-Baltic Forum for Nature Interpretation”. The Forum shall for instance:

· Have a responsible contact-person in each Nordic Baltic country
· Organise a seminar each second year – managed by a new country every time
· Organise a Nordic Baltic electronic network concerning nature interpretation
· Organise jobswob
· Organise Nordic Baltic education and training courses

Questionnaire THE EXPERIENCES AND EXPECTATIONS OF THE BSR EAGLE PARTNERS
(10.04.2007)

This short survey on the experiences and future expectations of the BSR Eagle partners was conducted in March 2007 in the framework of BSR Strategy formulation. The questionnaire got 15 answers from 50 partners. This is a fairly small percentage, but given the short notice and the partners’ busy schedules, a good result. Due to the small amount of answers, the results are somewhat skewed – depending on the question. However, the amount of answers obtained is probably enough to reflect the opinions of active partners.
To the question "Is there anything else you might want to comment on regarding the project?", a poll team got following answers:
• Project of many partners is difficult to manage, but a network of many partners is a benefit. • I think BSR Eagle has been the best environmental education developing project ever in Finland. • It is not a good thing that the money in the project is not available at the right time. It is not acceptable that the communities have to lend money to the project for months and months. • We would have needed more help, information and meetings from the beginning to make the administrative work easier and to get in touch with other partners.

For full summary of analysis of the poll, see below.

Nynashamn NS reports of sucessful twinning with Finnish partners
(13.03.2007)

During the week of Twinning with Finland 5/2 – 9/2 2007, the group visited different nature school in Sweden. The group followed a nature interpreter’s work during days and had discussions after sessions. “It was interesting to discuss how the day worked out but also, comparison between nature school in Finland and Sweden,” Said Mats Weijdmark, the host in Sweden. “We took Finns to Botkyrka, Farsta and, of course, to Nynäshamn’s Nature School. Then we split the goup, one half went to Solna Nature School, and others went to Eggeby. It was very good to have people from so many from different nature schools in Finland. We had very good pedagogical discussions. We compared what’s the different between Swedish and Finnish nature schools.
We suggest more twinning like this. Go to another country to follow the nature school leader in actions, gives you so much more instead of hearing or reading documents. During the day at our nature they followed a 5th grade class and the theme was how to make fire and who boil water fast. Everybody had to try how to make fire with flint tinder and steel. It was hard work for everyone” summarised Mats.

Nynäshamn Thematic Program on using our senses
(11.03.2007)

Nynäshamn NS has produced thematic program on With and about our senses in the nature. Working outdoors and subject-integrated with and about our senses .
Learning indoors is often done only with the sight and the hearing senses. Besides, these two senses are not utilised as much as they could have been. The sight is most often used to watch one-dimensional texts and pictures and the hearing is used to listen to facts that someone else has discovered. We must give our children the opportunity of having firsthand experiences and not only being reduced to other people’s written experiences.
The purpose with this chapter is to show that there is a way to work outdoors using all our senses when learning more about ours and other animal’s senses, and at the same time integrating various school subjects. An inevitable positive side effect of being outdoors and using all our senses is that it is an experience, which in turn gives knowledge about our surrounding world. That physical activity is integrated automatically by moving the education outdoors is a positive bonus.

Nynäshamn Thematic Program on Ancient Technology
(11.03.2007)

Nynäshamn NS has produced thematic program on Learning about ancient technology using outdoor learning and interdisciplinary teaching methods.
History is a school subject that often becomes too theoretical. Imagining what life was like many, many years ago is challenging and getting a grasp of the abstract amount of time between now and then can be even harder. Understanding how people though and perceived the world in a different time period is even more complicated—we often have problems understanding how other people think today!
This instructors guide aims to supplement the one-dimensional world of history books with the many dimensions of outdoor learning. Reading about, or hearing someone lecture on, how people made fire during the iron age might make for an exiting story, but this memory soon fades. A pupil who has sat on a log with flint and tinder in one hand, steel in the other, and a freshly prepared cylinder of wood chips in his or her lap; this pupil has a concrete situation to remember.

Thematic Program by Curonian Spit NP: Insects in Meadows
(27.12.2006)

In the BSR EAGLE web page Thematic Programs (link on the left), a new Thematic Program by Curonian Spit NP (Lithiania) is described.
The aim of the pursuit is to draw children's attention to the life of insects, those not yet ready for wintering. A group of children with pieces of cloth, jars, brushes and magnifiers in their hands, goes to shake bushes. A cloth is spread under a bush and children shake twigs and branches with insects falling down onto the cloth. Then with the help of a brush they are carefully driven into a jar and observed closely by magnifiers. Insects are usually put down on to the jar instead of a lid.
Children are able to scrutinize lots of living organisms in their natural grassland habitat i.e. in their “home sweet home”.

May the Spirit of Christmas adorn your life with all things bright and beautiful!
Wishing you all the happiness and success in the New Year!

Greetings from Latvia

Season's Greetings from Nature School Pikkutikka
(21.12.2006)

With the words by Alfred, Lord Tennyson we want to wish you Merry Christmas and all the best for the Year 2007!

Ring out, wild bells, to the wild sky,
The flying cloud, the frosty light;
The year is dying in the night;
Ring out, wild bells, and let him die.

Ring out the old, ring in the new,
Ring, happy bells, across the snow:
The year is going, let him go;
Ring out the false, ring in the true.

Ring out the grief that saps the mind,
For those that here we see no more,
Ring out the feud of rich and poor,
Ring in redress to all mankind.

Ring out false pride in place and blood,
The civic slander and the spite;
Ring in the love of truth and right,
Ring in the common love of good.

Ring out old shapes of foul disease,
Ring out the narrowing lust of gold;
Ring out the thousand wars of old,
Ring in the thousand years of peace.

Conference Learning by physical activity in Uddevalla 9th to 10th October
(14.12.2006)

Sedentary lifestyles amongst children and adolescents are growing, which can cause physical and mental health problems, now and in the future. Therefore it is of great importance that schools can offer young people possibilities to be physically active during the school day. To strengthen teachers’ ability to give physically active lessons outdoors we arranged this conference. We focused especially on the topics Maths, English and Swedish. Mats Wejdmark, from Nynäshamn Nature School, also partner in BSR Eagle held the session about maths. About 50 teachers participated in the conference and many of them used their new knowledge directly the same week with their pupils in school. To help teachers in their planning of lessons we have created a database with ready to use outdoor lessons in different subjects and for different ages.

“Lost seeds” – winter fairytale by Nature School Pikkutikka
(11.12.2006)

This fairytale begins with a story about an old elf living in the fireplace of an old oven in Pikkutikka building. When children get to see elf’s house, they notice that elf has left something for them: A letter, where he asks children to help him. The seeds elf uses in feeding small birds have been stolen by rats and jackdaws. Elf is too slow and old to get seeds back all by him self, so children must go and try finding the missing seed bags. In the letter there are instructions to climb up to the attic of Nature School and find a map, where elf has drawn a path to places where the seeds might be. In the map there is also a Wishing Tree; map is wrapped with wishing stripe, and kids must get it to the tree to make a wish. Once the map is found, children get out and start following the path drawn in the map.

This is how begins a story of the elf, a Thematic program in the Pikkutikka Nature School (Finland). The Thematic Program will be completed in 2007. Read more at the page Thematic Programs.

Did you know that:
- The ingredients in the frozen foods ”Chicken a la Jacob” from Dafgårs
and ”Chicken Sweet Chili” from Findus have travelled roughly once around the world (sum of transport distances 40,000 and 47,000 km respectively).
- everyone choosing eco-labelled milk in Sweden last year contributed to
a reduction in pesticide use by 33,000 kg.
- A family with two children can save up to 1700 SEK a year by baking their own KRAV-approved bread. Additionally, by baking your own bread you can avoid transport and other additives found in the loaves you buy at the supermarket.
- 1 kg of tomatoes grown in a green house requires 30 times more energy than 1 kg of carrots grown outdoors.

Changing your eating habits for the good of the environment, your health and your economy is the topic for Thematic Program from Nynäshamn Nature School.

Thematic Program from Nynäshamn Nature School: The Magpie
(27.11.2006)

The distinguishing feature of this learning theme is the combination of learning and physical activity in an outdoor environment. Increased mobility improves all types of future learning and gross motor ability is especially important for learning to read.
Anyone who has ever worked with children will agree that they want to learn. This raises the question of how children learn. Most children intuitively know the answer to this question - they learn through play and games. Teachers must be able to make use of children’s inherent desire to play and learn.
The Magpie’s Latin name is Pica pica. In Sweden, the magpie was originally called skjora, but today the magpie is commonly known by the name skata because of its long, slanted tail. Skata is an old Nordic word for something that slants. The magpie belongs to the crow family which in turn belongs to the order Passeriformes which encompasses nearly half of all birds including starlings, swallows, warblers, sparrows, and tits.
Current Thematic Program is a Preschool Theme for Outdoor Learning.

Travel to Belarus of BSR EAGLE Lithuanian partner Kurtuvenai RP
(20.10.2006)

From 28th of September till 3th of October our staff of Kurtuvenai Regional Park together with historians from Siauliai University, our partner in INTERREG project, organized travel to Belarus. During our tour we visited Narochansky National Park and places, meaningful for Lithuanian history, in surroundings of Naugardukas (Novogrudok), Brest, Lida, Gardinas (Grodno).
Communicating with workers from national park and other museums, we cognized, that nature education is not new idea for them, but paying heed to tourism, health resort, disport (hunt and fishery), they usually organize excursions, and have no special education activities for school classes. Traveling we visited some manors and castles, saw a lot of traditional villages and that helped us to know better the life-style of community of street-village and to seize deeper history of our state.

Twinning meeting in St.Petersburg with Malmö Nature School (Sweden) and Ninje Svirsky Nature Reserve (Russia)
(12.07.2006)

The meeting was held June 4-11 in St.Petersburg and in Ninje Svirsky Nature Reserve, which is situated about 400 kms north of St.Petersburg.
Through an invitation from Svetlana Belova in Moscow four Swedish nature interpreters working for Malmö Nature School visited Ninje Svirsky.
The program included visits on the shores of the river Svir and to the lake Ladoga as well as excursions in the Ninje Svirsky Nature Reserve.
A meeting in the town Ninje Pode with a local schoolteacher responsible for
Nature studies, as an after-school activity was a highlight.
"Another peak was meeting a bear in Ninje-Svirsky. Fortunately, the bear was at a distance and was just as shocked as we were!" said Per Celander from Malmö NS.
There are immense nature values in the area worth protection. The ideas of showing these to students must continue to develop. One way is to support the transportation of students from St. Petersburg to Ninje Svirsky. There is a lack of light equipment for nature studies.
"It was very interesting to visit a Russian “zapovednik” and to meet the guides full of knowledge about the area. We hope to host a twinning in Sweden in 2007." was the opinnion of Per.

Education program for schoolchildren "Habitats of European importance and species" in Lithuania
(26.05.2006)

Lithuania comprises 53 different types of preserved habitats of European importance. This represents 24 % of the entire number of preserved habitats (218) that are recognized in the European Union and listed in the Habitats Directive. Many of these habitat types need protection. They are found within various sea, freshwater, sand, meadow, forest, and swamp areas.
All territory of Zemaitija National Park is important for habitats of Natura 2000. There are about 16 habitats of different types in the park. We have prepared an ecological education program for schoolchildren "Habitats of European importance and species".
We do not have habitats like a European dry heaths, Juniperus communis formations, Siliceous rocky slopes, Fennoscandian wooded pastures, in our territories. During our visit to Salantai Region Park on the 2 of June we will visit such kind of habitats with schoolchildren from four different schools.
During this visit we will get to know about Nature 2000 importance, we will try to find the best method for teaching outdoor about different kind of Nature 2000 habitats, especially European dry heaths and Juniperus communis, we will try to work with children from different schools and to unite them by using games. This experience we will share with partners, to whom Nature 2000 is important.

New booklet on bugs from Nynäahamns Nature School
(19.05.2006)

The purpose of this booklet is to demonstrate how outdoor learning can be used to teach biological diversity in an interdisciplinary way, integrating many school subjects. Moving the learning experience outdoors also increases physical activity for pupils. Research has shown that we remember 10% of what we read, 20% of what we hear, 30% of what we see, 50% of what we both hear and see, 70% of what we discuss, 80% of what we experience, and 95% of what we teach to others (William Glasser). Thus, outdoor learning, collaboration in small groups, and using all senses should be an excellent learning method.
Biological diversity is a prerequisite for life on earth. Ecosystems with few species are always more vulnerable than ecosystems rich in variety. In ecosystems with great diversity there is always a species ready to take over a position or an ecological function that becomes available due to, for instance, a climate change. For future success in our endeavours to preserve biological diversity, we first need a broad awareness of the issue. In this booklet we present a smorgasbord of projects and activities to stimulate learning about biological diversity.
More about the booklet at the EAGLE web page Publications.

The Baltic Sea Marine Environment Commission (The Helsinki Commission) is pleased to invite stakeholders from all riparian countries and international organisations to participate in the kick-off Stakeholder Conference on the development of the strategic Baltic Sea Action Plan, which will be held on the 7th March 2006 in Helsinki, Finland.
In 2005, the HELCOM Member States and the EU resolved to develop an innovative Baltic Sea Action Plan, to ensure that all possible measures are taken to reduce pollution in the Baltic Sea and to repair the damage done to the marine environment.
This plan is based on Ecological Objectives, which are defined to reflect a common vision of a healthy Baltic Sea. The Ecological Objectives and their associated indicators will be used to evaluate the efficiency of existing environmental measures and to provide guidance for the development of future management measures for the region.
The development of the Action Plan will involve all the Baltic Sea coastal countries. Input and active participation from all major stakeholder groups in the region will also be required, to ensure that the Action Plan is relevant and can be effectively implemented in practice.
The overall aim of the Conference is to inform on the purpose and foreseen activities within the strategic HELCOM Action Plan to restore the Baltic marine environment, and to get input and commitments to its development at the local, national, and regional levels as well as from the private sector.
The Conference is considered as the starting point for the process to elaborate the environmental Baltic Sea Action Plan with active participation of all major stakeholder groups in the region. After a series of thematic meetings and a final Stakeholder Conference in March 2007 which will look into and review a first draft of a single Baltic Sea Action Plan the finalised environmental strategy will be adopted at a Ministerial HELCOM meeting currently planned for late 2007.
The Helsinki Commission hopes to receive your input to the kick-off Stakeholder Conference and also invite your active participation in the development of the Baltic Sea Action Plan.

We had to pick 4 classes from each municipality, total of 16 classes of 7th grade to join the project”, says Håkon Saxrud, the leader of the program. “Everyone in the project got a free bus from the school to the investigation boat and to the cleaning centre for wastewater, and back again. The project got a very positive reception”.
The duration of the project period was from 4th of September 2004 till 24th of June 2005.
Pupils went out on Lake Mjųsa with the Nature School’s investigation-ship m/s “Miljųsa” to learn how wastewater is cleaned at HIAS.

National Strategy on Education for Sustainable Development and the Role of Nature Schools
(04.05.2005)

The Meeting on Education for Sustainable Development (ESD) in Vilnius on March 17-18, 2005 debated the progress in implementing ESD, good practices in the region and identified key challenges that lie ahead. It discussed the role of the UNECE region in implementing ESD in a global context, and its cooperation with United Nations Educational, Scientific and Cultural Organization (UNESCO). The Meeting also launched the United Nations Decade of Education for Sustainable Development in the UNECE region.
In this context, and proceeding from the Baltic Agenda 21 and other relevant documents, the compilation of Estonian national strategy on Education for Sustainable Development was launched on March10, 2005 by signing the terms of reference by minister of environment and minister of education and science. The working group on ESD, established at the Ministry of Education on April 6, 2004, prepared it. This working group, in co-operation with universities, nature schools, teachers, national parks and nature protection areas, environmental organizations and other relevant parties has started to work out the ESD strategy according to the terms of reference.
The support of the BSR EAGLE project will be used for developing the part of the strategy concerning the nature schools. Nature schools will play a central role in this strategy as centres for environmental education, which develop methods of outdoor and practical environmental education. It is also planned that the nature centres will be tightly co-operating with schools in offering environmental education programmes, including larger outdoor programmes and shorter programmes that can be fitted with regular school curriculum. At the early stage (in 2005), a network of pilot schools will established, and it will be expanded in further years. The creation of database of nature schools and partner schools, supported by the BSR EAGLE project is also relevant for this task.
The development of strategy is co-financed by Ministry of Education and Science, Ministry of Environment, Environmental Investment Centre and the BSR EAGLE Project.

BSR Eagle lendas Tartusse
(23.02.2005)

Tartus looduseuurijate seltsi majas oli 8. veebruaril Eesti loodushariduse seltsi korraldatud seminar „Mida Juku õues ei õpi, seda Juhan vallaametnikuna ei tea“, mis on üks sisulisi avaüritusi formaalselt mullu sügisel alanud Läänemerepiirkonna Interreg IIIB loodusharidusprojektile BSR Eagle.
Eagle’is osaleb kümme riiki: Taani, Soome, Saksamaa, Rootsi, Eesti, Läti, Leedu, Poola, Norra ja Venemaa. Projekti juhtpartner on Turu ülikool ning üldjuht Reet Kokovkin Kärdlast. Eagle kestab 2007. aasta augustini.
Tartu seminari sihtrühm olidki Tartumaa omavalitsuste ametnikud. Kokkutulnuid maavalitsuse nimel tervitanud maasekretär Tõnu Vesi kinnitas, et aastani 2014 ette vaatav maakonna arengukava tahab, et Tartumaast saaks peaga maakond ja et 365-leheküljelises dokumendis on sõna „loodus“ kirjas 135 korda, samal ajal „raha“ vaid 65 korda...
Lisaks Vesile astusid üles Ivar Puura ja Margo Uusen Tartu ülikoolist, looduseuurijate seltsi uus teadussekretär Maris Paju, Helle Kont Tartu loodusmajast ning Tartu vallavanem Aivar Soop. Soop selgitas, miks tegi tema vald looduskooli Äksi külla ja kuidas peaks sellest lõpuks saama jääaja teemapark.
